The built-in Windows shortcut

On Windows 10 and Windows 11, press the Windows key and the period key (Win + .) or the semicolon key (Win + ;) at the same time. A small panel pops up wherever your cursor is, with emojis, GIFs, and kaomoji tabs along the top. Click any emoji to insert it directly into the field you were typing in.

Where the built-in panel gets slow

The Windows emoji panel is handy, but it resets every time you close it, so there's no way to build up a longer string of emojis before pasting. Search only matches the emoji's official name, which isn't always the word you'd naturally think of, and the panel can lag or fail to appear inside certain apps, like some browser extensions or older desktop software.

Using an online emoji keyboard instead

Because a web-based emoji keyboard runs in a browser tab, it works identically no matter what program you're ultimately pasting into. You can search loosely — typing 'sad' instead of the exact emoji name — build a whole sentence of emojis in the text bar, and copy the entire string in one click, then switch to your chat, document, or spreadsheet and paste.

A quick comparison

For a single, occasional emoji, the Win + . shortcut is usually the fastest option since it's already on your machine. For anything more deliberate — a longer message, a search for an emoji you can't quite remember the name of, or copying the same emoji into several places — an online emoji keyboard tends to save more time.
